If you are living with a medical condition and research has shown that massage therapy has successfully been used to treat it, talk with your doctor. I receive prescriptions from doctors frequently that I use with my clients. The prescription from your doctor will need to include the following:
1) Medical Necessity: medical condition or injury being treated.
2) Frequency: number of sessions needed each month.
3) Duration: how long will you need to receive this treatment? How long should each session last? 60 min? 90 min?
Here's where things can differ for clients. If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA) and have a Flex card, simply bring it to your appointment and use it to pay for your therapy session. If you do not have a card, you will pay for your session at the time of service and receive a receipt that you submit for reimbursement.
If you don't have a FSA or HSA, your insurance may still cover your massage therapy sessions. As noted above, you will need to receive a prescription from your doctor. You will also need to contact your insurance company to confirm that these services will be covered. Some plans specifically outline Massage Therapy. With other plans, massage therapy is covered as Manual Therapy. This typically would fall under the same category as physical therapy/rehabilitation and/or chiropractic care. Please review your plan details and/or call your insurance company to confirm your coverage.
Once you confirm your coverage, review your prescription and coverage information with your massage therapist. You will then be able to receive your session, pay the out of pocket fee, and your therapist will provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
